A new poll shows 40 per cent of New Zealanders support the call from the Greens for a temporary tax to help rebuild Christchurch.
The nationwide phone survey was carried out by UMR.
Respondents favour the levy on Kiwis with incomes over $48,000, over increased Crown debt or big spending cuts. Twenty-nine per cent of people would prefer to see the Government make cuts and 22 per cent would rather the government borrow more.
Preference for the levy is strongest in Christchurch with 49 per cent of residents in favour of a levy, and weakest in Auckland at 34 per cent.
Prime Minister John Key has ruled out introducing an earthquake levy.
