Zanzibar's incumbent president was sworn in for a second and final term, after an election marred by violence, intimidation and allegations of fraud.
President Amani Abeid Karume, who had accused opposition leaders of "treason", said the poll was "a great achievement of democracy. The opposition must accept defeat and respect the people's choice".
The swearing-in came after police arrested leaders from the opposition Civic United Front and suppressed protests amid claims of fraud.
The party's Seif Shariff Hamad said five supporters died during protests on Tuesday.
