Two Green MPs are vying to replace Jeanette Fitzsimons as co-leader. Claire Trevett considers their chances.
Metiria Turei: Her youth (she's 39 to her rival's 56) will appeal, but she has a much lower public profile than her rival. Entered Parliament in 2002 and has strong relationships with caucus colleagues from her years as party whip. She is on the party's social justice wing, rather than the environmental. But of the two candidates, she is the most likely to be able and willing to easily straddle the two. More academic in approach and believes the Greens should work with other parties.
Sue Bradford: Has lived on Struggle Street and has a strong voice on social justice, valuable in Opposition and during economic downturn. Strong record in Parliament and wider afield. High public profile, but not all of it is positive. The Greens applauded the anti-smacking law - but she could be punished for it if members fear her association with it will put people off. Less likely to compromise.
Two put hands up for Fitzsimons' job
