KEY POINTS:
What a monumental balls-up on the part of the brains trust behind Auckland City Council's new logo.
Finance committee members are demanding chief executive David Rankin give a full account of exactly how much the blue triangle logo cost, why it was felt there was a need to change the existing logo, why nobody on council was consulted about the project, and how much Rankin anticipates it will cost to keep his triangle if Triangle TV directors take the council to court because of similarities between the two designs.
One blue triangle looks pretty much like another and, although the reasons for Triangle TV to have a triangle as their logo are pretty clear, the brilliant inspiration behind the decision to have Auckland City represented by a three-sided shape is less obvious. Is it supposed to look like a sail? Rangitoto perhaps? Who knows?
What it looks like turning into is a Bermuda Triangle where time, money and, potentially, careers simply vanish.
