KEY POINTS:
A low-key meeting of religious leaders has been held to try to stitch together the remnants of the proposed new Christian party.
Last month the so far unnamed alliance between Destiny Church and independent MP Gordon Copeland got off to a disastrous start when Destiny blindsided Mr Copeland with their unexpected announcement that he would co-lead the party with Richard Lewis.
Mr Copeland labelled that shambolic and "Mickey Mouse", and said he could not work with Mr Lewis.
Mr Copeland is understood to have taken part in a meeting of the new party's advisory council held last week. Both Mr Copeland or Mr Lewis were singing from the same hymn sheet yesterday, with neither man willing to comment on the meeting.
"We will be making announcements in due course, I hope in the next few weeks," Mr Copeland said.
Mr Lewis, the former leader of Destiny's now deregistered political party Destiny New Zealand, said those who had been at the meeting had agreed it was not helpful to make comments to the media until the fledgling party had a firm statement on the way forward.
"We're not quite at that point yet ... the positive note is that we have been back around the table, the key people, and we are working forward on that basis."
Mr Lewis would not say who had been at the meeting, but said Mr Copeland "was involved in this process, with all of the people".
Both said they were anxious to avoid a repeat of last month's botched announcement.
"One learns nothing in life if you don't learn from your mistakes," Mr Copeland said.
