KEY POINTS:
A policeman was gouged in the eye when police were called to an out-of-control party in Mosgiel early today.
Acting Senior Sergeant Craig Brown said police were called to the party about 1am and five people were arrested.
"One gentleman was charged with injuring with intent after he's alleged to have gouged a police officer in the eye."
Mr Brown did not believe the policeman sustained any serious injury.
"It was a nasty one. It could have had more serious consequences."
The man has been bailed to appear in Dunedin District Court on May 1, as have four others charged with offences including wilful damage and obstruction.
