Concern is mounting over a rifle that can fire without the trigger being pulled.
Police have taken 700 of the Remington 223 calibre model 7 rifles out of service, after allegations that a woman in the United States accidentally shot and killed her son.
An article in the New Zealand Deerstalkers Association newsletter recently drew attention to reported problems with the gun.
On seeing the article the police withdrew the gun while its safety is investigated.
Police say the rifles are mostly used in training.
