A convicted paedophile living in a Wellington suburb says he has been kicked and punched by neighbours alerted to his past by police.
Barry Grant Brown, aged 35, phoned the Post newspaper and left the following message: "I've been assaulted, assaulted by people on the street out here. Severely assaulted, punched, punched to the head, kicked in the chest, kicked in the stomach, thrown down my own steps."
Last week, police delivered leaflets to Strathmore residents alerting them to Mr Brown's convictions and his presence in their suburb.
The leaflets included his picture, his physical characteristics and the advice: "Kilbirnie police are concerned that he is living close to Strathmore School, Strathmore Kindergarten and local parks. We are encouraging residents to be aware of Barry Brown and his activities in your area."
Mr Brown was jailed for five years in 1998 after pulling a 5-year-old boy into a Wellington flat and sexually assaulting him. He was freed recently from Rimutaka Prison.
Police said he had also abducted a 6-year-old girl from a park and indecently assaulted her. Court reports show he was convicted for indecent assaults on small children in 1982, 1985 and 1990.
The telephone message to the Post said his lawyer had advised him not to speak to the media. In the windows of his home were pamphlets about legal aid and the Police Complaints Authority.
