Police are warning internet users who access porn sites that a message from police advising them they've been fined is a scam.
Police said they had received several reports about the scam, in which people accessing adult websites received a message purportedly from the New Zealand Police advising them they had been fined for accessing the website and to pay a fee.
The message includes the police logo and asks users to enter banking details.
In at least one case, the person's computer was frozen and they were told it would remain frozen until they paid the fee into the account.
Police said they had no association with any of the websites and suggested users avoid accessing such sites.
