Senior police have visited the final resting place of a teenager shot dead in an armed stand-off with their officers earlier this week.
Lachan Kelly-Tumarae, 19, of Flaxmere in Hastings, was shot by an officer with a standard issue Glock pistol in Fernhill, about 15km from Napier, around 1.30am and died in hospital about 3am.
He had presented a shotgun at officers in both Maraenui and at Fernhill, police said.
Preliminary inquiries suggested Mr Kelly-Tumarae fired the shotgun he was carrying before being shot dead.
At the request of family, a group of senior police visited Mr Kelly-Tumarae's body at Omahu Marae in Hastings yesterday.
His funeral was held there today.
The visit came amid news an investigation into Mr Kelly-Tumarae's death was set to stretch into next week.
Police this afternoon confirmed they had spoken to the occupants of a grey van in Maraenui, near where Mr Kelly-Tumarae was first approached by police.
However, they were still awaiting forensic analysis of the shooting scene.
Detective Superintendent Andy Lovelock said though a clearer picture was emerging of what happened in the shooting, more work was needed.
"We have interviewed all Police staff and others involved in the incident. It will be several weeks though before the results of forensic tests are available," Mr Lovelock said.
"We're very grateful for the help and co-operation we have received from the public during this inquiry."
The Independent Police Conduct Authority has launched an investigation into the shooting.
Police are also conducting a homicide investigation, as well as taking the lead role in the coronial inquiry.
