A Turangi house where a man was critically injured in an explosion over the weekend was not a methamphetamine, or P, lab, but a drug-related cause is not being ruled out, police say.
The injured man was taken to Waikato Hospital's intensive care unit after the explosion and subsequent fire at the Paehoro Grove house about 7.20pm on Saturday.
He was likely to be transferred to a burns unit at Auckland's Middlemore Hospital later today, Waikato District Health Board spokeswoman Mary Anne Gill said.
The house where the explosion occurred was a family home and not a P lab, Turangi police Senior Sergeant Sue Douglas said today.
"We're still investigating why the explosion occurred and that doesn't rule out other drug-related causes," she said.
The production of cannabis oil was one possibility.
Ms Douglas said the scene examination was complete and witnesses were being interviewed.
Police would also speak to family members, some of whom where in the house at the time of the explosion, she said.
