KEY POINTS:
The investigation into a double stabbing in Dunedin is being treated like a homicide due to the vicious nature of the attack.
A man and a woman, both aged 40, were hospitalised on Sunday after the knife attack at a house in suburban Fairfield on Sunday night.
The woman was discovered by neighbours with multiple stab wounds, mostly to her chest, and the man had at least one stab wound, to his stomach, the Otago Daily Times reported.
Neighbours heard the woman's cries during a domestic dispute between the former couple at the woman's house.
Detective Senior Sergeant Steve McGregor of Dunedin police said both underwent surgery yesterday on their potentially life-threatening injuries, and were in a stable condition last night.
He said police had spoken briefly with the woman, who they were treating as the victim.
They were not seeking anyone else in relation to the attack.
The pair's names are yet to be released as next-of-kin were not fully aware of the situation, Mr McGregor said.
He said charges were likely once all information had been gathered.
