Police may need to use DNA testing to identify a skeleton found near the remote Te Urewera National Park, southeast of Murupara.
Detective Sergeant John Wilson said police and ESR scientists were at the scene yesterday after the skeleton was discovered by two hunters on the weekend.
"From their general appearance, it appears they may have been there for sometime, perhaps as long as decades," Mr Wilson said.
