Christchurch police think they know the identity of a middle-aged woman found seriously injured in the central city early today.
The woman was found near the end of Durham St about 4.30am, Christchurch Central CIB Detective Sergeant Craig Farrant said.
She was taken to Christchurch Hospital with serious head injuries.
Mr Farrant said police thought they knew who the woman was but had yet to talk to her to confirm her identity and what had happened.
"There was a lack of witnesses in the area," he told NZPA.
"We're still waiting for confirmed doctors' reports and everything to ascertain what injuries she has and how they occurred."
The injuries were not life-threatening, Mr Farrant said.
Anyone with information about the incident should contact Christchurch Central police station, he said.
