Police have spoken to the driver of a vehicle they believe was involved in the hit-and-run death of a woman in Matamata early on Friday morning.
Catherine Matson, 43, was found dead on the side of SH24 on the outskirts of the Waikato town around 5.30am on Friday.
Police believe her death is not suspicious and it appears she had been hit by a vehicle.
Detective Sergeant Martin Hughes said police had spoken to a driver they believe may have hit Ms Matson.
"We have sent some items away for forensic testing and it may be some time before we can confirm the results of those tests. But at this stage, it appears her death is the result of being hit by a vehicle," Mr Hughes said.
Police had received reports of a woman walking along the middle of the highway early on Friday morning, dressed in dark clothing.
Inquiries into the incident would continue this week.
