KEY POINTS:
Police in Canterbury are urging drivers to scrape the ice of their windscreens after stopping one speeding motorist with virtually zero visibility.
Canterbury traffic manager Derek Erasmus said the motorist was stopped doing 90km/h on the northern motorway, having bothered to scratch out barely more than a slit in the ice coating his windscreen.
"You could see his visibility was practically nil and it is not worth the risk to other road users.
"You need to see where you are going if you want to be a safe driver."
He said the driver could be charged with careless use of a vehicle or be given an instant $150 fine.
Mr Erasmus recommended motorists take a few minutes to use of cold water or a scraper before heading off in the morning.
