KEY POINTS:
Northland police attending a domestic callout last night may have arrived just in time to prevent a murder.
Neighbours of a Rawene address called police around 10.30pm.
They arrived to find a 40-year-old woman with multiple stab wounds.
A man, also aged 40 and believed to be her ex-partner, was arrested and will appear in Kaikohe District Court today charged with attempted murder and kidnapping.
The woman was taken to Whangarei Hospital where she remains in a serious condition.
Police spokeswoman Sarah Kennett said few details could be released as the case was now before the courts.
A scene examination was to be carried out today and a number of witnesses were being interviewed.
