Northland police are still hunting the man responsible for a brutal home invasion in Paihia on Sunday.
Twenty-four-year-old Brad Johnston is recovering in Whangarei Hospital after he was stabbed through the chest after rushing to help his panic-stricken friend during the attack.
A male intruder broke into the Davis Cres house at about 4.30am as Mr Johnston and a female friend were sleeping.
The intruder went into the woman's room, held a knife to her throat and threatened to kill her.
The intruder stabbed Mr Johnston when he rushed in after hearing a a scream.
Detective Sergeant Mike Foster said neither of the victims knew the offender who was a "complete danger".
Mr Foster added: "The sooner we can crack it the better for everyone."
