The top floors of Wellington central police station have been evacuated after a chemical smell was detected in the building this morning.
Senior Sergeant Anita Dixon told NZPA Fire Service staff were trying to find the cause of the smell, and it was possible there was a chemical leak.
Staff
from the sixth floor and above had been evacuated but floors below that, including those housing prisoners, were fine.
"The beauty is it's a weekend so we've got very few people here," she said.
The smell was detected late this morning.
