Reefton police station on the West Coast has been cordoned off after police arrested a man and impounded a car they believe was a mobile methamphetamine lab.
The station will be reopened once scientists declare it safe.
Police arrested a man after he was seen driving his car along the railway line at Totara Flat - between Greymouth and Reefton - yesterday.
Sergeant Dave Cross, of Greymouth, said the 45-year-old Motueka man's vehicle contained substances and utensils used in the manufacture of P.
The car has been impounded at the Reefton police station, and the station was cordoned off in case of contamination.
"The chemicals used in the manufacture of P are not good," Mr Cross said.
"The offender had been in and out of the station, and as a result it has been cordoned off until ESR (Environmental Science and Research) go over the area and say it is clean and safe to work in."
The man has been charged with a number of offences including being in possession of utensils used for the manufacture of P, possession of cannabis and obstruction.
