A stolen vehicle that allegedly failed to stop for police was spiked three times by officers before the driver allegedly jumped into a river to evade arrest.
Police were alerted to the stolen van just out of Taupo this afternoon.
The vehicle allegedly failed to stop for police at Waitahanui. It was spiked at Bulli Pt, but continued to drive to Motutere on a deflated tyre, police said.
The van was spiked again near Motuoapa but still did not stop so was spiked again at the entrance to Turangi.
Police said the van stopped on the bridge where a man got out and jumped into the river.
