The driver of a third vehicle has been spoken to in relation to a two-car head-on crash that left one man dead and another in critical care, police said today.
The crash happened in West Auckland on Friday afternoon and police said they were seeking further witnesses to confirm if speeding was involved.
Constable Colin Nuttall said the driver of the third vehicle, a silver Subaru, had been located and spoken to.
However, police were still trying to establish if he played any part in the collision.
"We've spoken to him and what we are requesting is for any witnesses to the driving before the crash to come forward," he said.
The incident occurred at the intersection of Woodbank Dr and West Coast Rd, Glen Eden, about 4.20pm.
Police arrived to find that a red Hyundai station wagon had crossed the centre line and collided with a on-coming Ford utility vehicle.
The 21-year-old driver of the Hyundai died at the scene. His name was not yet available.
The 44-year-old driver of the Ford utility was taken to hospital, where his condition today was described as serious but stable.
Mr Nuttall said witnesses had reported seeing a Subaru and another vehicle travelling at speed before the crash.
