Police have slammed the "stupidity" of Otago motorists who drove dunk in atrocious weather over the weekend.
Otago police coastal area prevention manager Inspector Mel Aitken said 17 people were caught driving over the breath alcohol limit between Friday and Sunday.
The drivers, aged 19 to 69, had breath alcohol readings of between 250mcg -- the legal limit -- and 935mcg.
"It is highly disappointing that people are prepared to take risks, as well as putting other road users in jeopardy," Ms Aitken said.
"Furthermore, Saturday night's weather was atrocious, so the fact that drivers would choose to drive intoxicated in such conditions adds to the stupidity and poor judgment of those apprehended.
