KEY POINTS:
Lower Hutt police were shot at with a slug gun after pulling a car over as part of a boyracer operation this morning.
The incident came only a day after the funeral of Sergeant Don Wilkinson who was fatally shot while on a covert methamphetamine operation in Auckland.
Senior Sergeant Mark Buttar said police in Lower Hutt were talking to the occupants of a car when they heard a shot at 12.20am.
He said the shot missed the officers by a metre and put a dent in the door of the car they had pulled over.
"Taking pot shots at police officers and members of the public from moving cars is extremely irresponsible. We don't know what the motivation was but we want to find the person responsible," Senior Sgt Buttar said.
He said police were looking for a dark blue hatchback car with tinted windows that had been heading west along the Esplanade.
"It was a foolhardy thing to do and gave everyone a bit of a fright," Senior Sgt Buttar said.
He said the scene was searched but because of "heavy rain, poor lighting and ground conditions - lots of sand, small stones and broken sea shells" the pellet was not found.
Senior Sgt Buttar said anyone with information should call police on 04 560 2600.
