Dunedin police shot dead a young seal to end its suffering after it was hit by a car today.
A police spokesman said the seal, described as not fully grown, was hit by a car which did not stop on Portsmouth Drive about 8am.
A number of people phoned police to report the incident.
The spokesman said the seal "was obviously severely injured" so police shot it.
"It was the quickest, easiest way to end its suffering," he said.
