KEY POINTS:
A police officer fired two shots at a stolen vehicle as it was driven towards him after ramming a police car in Kawakawa last night.
Police said they were alerted to the stolen vehicle on Waiomio Rd south of Kawakawa.
When police arrived the driver of the stolen car took off at speed, clipping one police car in the process.
Other police pursued the driver along State Highway 1.
Another police car was placed across the road to stop the vehicle but the driver smashed into the stationary car, moving it several metres up the road.
The driver continued driving towards a police officer standing on the road who fired two shots at the stolen car.
The stolen car was eventually stopped by a police cordon on Ruapekapeka Rd just south of Kawakawa and the driver taken into custody.
A 17-year-old male was later charged with unlawfully taking a motor vehicle, aggravated assault, failing to stop, reckless driving, burglary, driving while forbidden and assault with a weapon.
He would appear in Kaikohe District Court later today.
Police said no one was injured in the incident and the Police Complaints Authority will carry out an independent investigation.
