KEY POINTS:
An 8-year-old boy is fighting for his life after a crash on an Auckland motorway which seriously injured his father and left his mother in severe shock.
Constable Karl Bevin of the Waitemata police district serious crash unit said the boy had surgery yesterday for life-threatening head injuries.
Mr Bevin said the family were approaching the city on the Northwestern Motorway on Wednesday, when their white Toyota Corona collided with a bridge barrier near the Lincoln Rd off-ramp at 2.40pm.
A witness told police that a male Maori driving a purple van, possibly a Mitsubishi L300, stopped at the scene then sped off. Police are seeking the man in the hope he might have witnessed the crash but did not believe he was involved in it.
The boy's father, 38, is in a stable condition in Auckland City Hospital.
Meanwhile, Waitemata police are also seeking witnesses to a crash on Kahikatea Flat Rd at 6.30pm on Easter Monday.
Jamie Lance McElrea, 17, died in hospital on Tuesday morning. Three unrestrained teenagers were thrown from the blue Subaru WRX hatchback they were travelling in.
Police believe the Subaru was being driven recklessly and at speed before it lost control and rolled several times. They are appealing for anyone who saw the vehicle before the crash.
The three survivors are in stable conditions.
