Police are hunting two men after a 22-year-old was attacked and robbed outside Wellington railway station early today.
The victim was waiting for an early morning train when he was approached by the men who demanded money and punched him without warning, Detective Sergeant Damian Murphy said.
"The victim was held in a headlock while his pockets and backpack were rummaged through."
He received minor cuts and bruises and his cellphone was stolen.
Mr Murphy said police were seeking witnesses to the 2am "completely unprovoked" attack, including a number of taxi drivers who were in the area at the time.
The offenders were described as Maori or Polynesian and 18-25-years-old.
One was just over 182cm tall, of heavy build and wearing a light coloured beanie, light coloured top and long dark pants.
The second man was of slighter build than the first and was wearing a dark coloured hooded top.
