Police want to thank a Good Samaritan who stopped to help a police officer subdue an enraged motorist in the Blenheim suburb of Redwoodtown this morning.
Blenheim police said a 45-year-old had to be pepper-sprayed after being pulled over for a minor traffic infringement about 8.40am.
Constable Dan Mattison said the man quickly became enraged and was arrested after threatening the sole constable.
Spray was needed to subdue the man and during the struggle a passing motorist stopped to help until more police arrived.
The motorist left before police could get his details.
"Police would like to convey their thanks to the motorist and would appreciate it if he could contact the Blenheim police," Mr Mattison said.
The 45-year-old was to appear in Blenheim District Court today charged with threatening to kill, aggravated assault, resisting arrest and failing to remain stopped for police.
Police were also seeking witnesses to the incident.
