A badly damaged car found on the side of Paierau Rd yesterday, near Matahiwi Winery, appears to have been abandoned, say police.
Traffic sergeant Chris Megaw said it was unknown whether the Honda Civic had been a victim of high winds overnight.
The night shift found the car and stickered it, and inquiries were continuing. There were no reports of anyone injured.
Glass was scattered on the side of the road.
Mr Megaw said he had wondered at the start of his shift if the day was heading towards truck-toppling wind speeds, but apart from the bus near Eketahuna there had been no incidents.
