Raymond Bieleski was last seen at his Avondale home in Auckland on Good Friday, April 10.
Police spokeswoman Noreen Hegarty said the 47 year-old could have caught an Intercity bus from Hamilton to Rotorua on April 12.
She said Mr Bieleski has "gone bush" in the Urewera Ranges in the past and that could be where he is now.
"His family have fears for his safety due to his state of mind, the fact he has not made contact with friends or family and due to weather conditions for which he may be ill-prepared," Ms Hegarty said.
She said Mr Bieleski is described as European, of medium build and 175cms tall. Mr Bieleski has brown eyes and dark brown hair that is greying at the edges.
Ms Hegarty said anyone who has seen Mr Bieleski should call Constable Julia Bixley on (09) 820 5701.
