A man who fled Christchurch District Court by impersonating another prisoner is described as dangerous by police.
They are looking for William Steven Cooper, who evaded custody at the court on Monday. He was scheduled to appear on robbery and firearms-related charges.
A police spokesman said Cooper was able to escape from the court after impersonating another prisoner. A warrant for his arrest had been issued.
Police thought Cooper may head to Invercargill where he has connections.
They warned he was considered dangerous and should not be approached.
Cooper also goes by the names "Billy", "Will" or "Gamble". He is a male, Maori, aged 19, 187cm tall, with short dark hair. He was last seen wearing a dark-coloured checked shirt, trackpants and black shoes with a large white Nike tick on the side.
Anyone with information in relation to Cooper's whereabouts should call Christchurch police or on the CrimeStoppers crimeline.
