Kaikoura police want to hear from two men seen near where a woman was allegedly sexually attacked in the town early on New Year's Day.
The woman told police she was attacked in West End between 1am and 3am on Saturday while walking back to where she was staying. She was allegedly grabbed from behind, pulled in to a car park and sexually assaulted.
Sergeant Barry Hansen told NZPA there had been a good public response to their call for information, including from a woman who had spoken to two men urinating near the walkway leading to Deal Street between 2-2.30am.
There was "a bit of banter" between the three, and the woman continued on her way.
"We just need to talk to them and see if they saw anything," Mr Hansen said.
Both men were Caucasian.
The alleged attacker was described as being tall with long, curly shoulder-length hair and was wearing a dark beanie and a dark T-shirt.
The victim was being cared for by family in her home town, Mr Hansen said.
