KEY POINTS:
Police are appealing for information after a man armed with a pistol robbed a Wellington-area dairy today.
Detective Sergeant Scott Cooper said the man entered the dairy in Wainuiomata about midday and brought an item.
He returned 40 minutes later and, after asking for a phone card, presented a Glock pistol at the dairy owner and demanded the contents of the till.
"The dairy owner did the right thing in complying with the demands and the robber fled on foot," Mr Cooper said.
The dairy owner was shaken but unhurt.
The offender was described as Maori or Polynesian, in his 20s, about 1.8m tall, of medium build, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, a black and white checked scarf covering the lower part of his face and dark coloured jeans and carrying a grey or light coloured backpack.
