Police are looking for a woman who may have left the scene of a car crash in the Manawatu today.
Two cars were involved in the accident at the Ohingaiti railway crossing, 34km southwest of Taihape about 6am.
It was reported to police a 19-year-old woman had disappeared from the scene, but that report was so far unconfirmed, central police communications team leader Amanda Jensen said.
The woman may have fled the scene or been picked up by a member of the public, Ms Jensen said.
It was also possible the vehicle's occupants were not telling the truth about the woman being at the scene at all.
"They're not being completely honest with us about the situation," she said.
An ambulance was sent to the crash, but it was not known yet what injuries were sustained by occupants of the cars.
The woman was described as part Maori, fair complexion with brown hair.
She was wearing a green t-shirt and dark trousers.
