Police were this afternoon searching for clues to a fatal stabbing at an address in south Auckland.
A 37-year-old man died after he was attacked outside 198 Preston Road, Otara around 11.30pm last night.
St Johns Ambulance staff treated the man at the scene but were unable to save him.
Preston Road was closed off today as police searched for clues outside the address.
Detective Senior Sergeant Darrell Harper said he believed the victim was stabbed repeatedly.
He told Radio New Zealand it appeared the victim took a few steps toward his attacker and then walked toward a house, where he collapsed near a path.
Neighbours told Newstalk ZB the victim was a family man, who lived at a house on Preston Road with his wife and six children, who may have been at the wrong place at the wrong time.
Police are seeking the occupants of two cars seen speeding away from the scene, both of which had several occupants.
A large Polynesian woman was spotted in the front passenger seat of a red, late model Holden saloon with a spoiler. The other vehicle was an older model silver Subaru with a roof rack.
The cars were seen heading along Preston Road towards the East Tamaki area.
A post mortem examination was to be carried out today.
