KEY POINTS:
Police are confident they have identified the man who savagely raped and attacked a young woman in Dunedin at the weekend, but will not charge him immediately.
They would not comment yesterday when asked whether the man they had identified was Liam James Reid, who appeared in court in Christchurch charged with the murder of deaf woman Emma Agnew.
Reid, 35, a short, slightly built man with a shaven head, stood in the dock of Christchurch District Court yesterday for less than 40 seconds as his lawyer sought a remand to a pre-depositions conference on December 20.
Dunedin CIB head Detective Senior Sergeant Steve McGregor said investigations into the Dunedin rape were progressing "very well", and re-assured the public they were safe.
The person who did this "is not walking the streets today," he said.
The Dunedin attack occurred when the 21-year-old student was dragged off Rattray St about 12.30am on Saturday and subjected to a brutal attack lasting more than two hours.
A nylon rope was held round her neck and she was manually strangled leaving her with serious injuries to her face and body.
