KEY POINTS:
Police say they are following some strong lines of inquiry after discovering the body of a man who was murdered in his flat in Parnell on Tuesday night.
The man, who is in his mid-30s, has not yet been identified but police say they have a good idea who he is.
He is expected to be formally identified later today after his body is removed from the Claybrook Rd apartment and an autopsy performed.
Detective Senior Sergeant Scott Beard said police got a call around 9pm that a body was in the flat.
A police team that attended the call found the man lying dead on the floor of the small apartment.
Mr Beard did not provide details of whether there was a struggle and if police were looking for a weapon.
"The scene examination hasn't been completed as yet but it appears to be a violent death," said Mr Beard.
The old apartment block is at the end of a cul-de-sac and consists of 18 small flats, one of which the victim had only recently moved into.
It is not clear if he had any flatmates.
With the building cordoned off, specialists yesterday combed through letterboxes, rubbish bins and gardens looking for evidence.
A Ford Laser parked in a carport under one of the apartments was also cordoned off.
The car is understood to be connected to the apartment where the body was found.
Mr Beard said members of the public should not be too concerned about their safety.
"While we have had a homicide here in Parnell, I'm not sure that people should be overly concerned that we have a killer out there on the loose.
"Like I said, we are following lines of inquiry."
