Police say they are satisfied a boy reported missing near Takapuna wharf this afternoon is safe and well.
Emergency services launched a search for the 11-year-old boy after a member of the public called to say he had been swept into the water just before 2pm.
But after an extensive search and speaking to many kitesurfers and bystanders, Inspector Ian Brooker said they were happy the boy has left the area safely.
"It is apparent from the response that a large number of people of all ages were at the boat ramp at the time. None of these people saw anyone in distress," said Inspector Brooker.
Large numbers of longboarders, kite surfers, surfers, kayakers and windsurfers took to the water at Takapuna Beach to tackle the waves, which locals said were the largest they had seen for several years.
