A 25-year-old Masterton kayaker who was dragged out 2.5km to sea by strong winds had to be rescued by a police maritime unit on Saturday morning.
Emergency services were called to help the woman, who was caught in rough conditions.
She had gone out to check a crayfish pot atOcean Beach.
The woman was wearing a lifejacket and managed to stay in the inflatable kayak until the Wellington Police Maritime Unit arrived and brought her to back to shore.
