Police remove body of person from scene of fire-ravaged house in Stoke, Nelson

Police said the body of the person located in the remains of the house fire yesterday in the Nelson suburb of Stoke has been removed from the scene today.

A post mortem will take place later today.

Police and Fire Service officers remain at the scene, working to establish the cause of the fire.

The body was found early yesterday in the remains of the Nelson home which had burned down overnight on Tuesday.

Police have warned that the severity of the fire could mean identification could take several days.

Family have been informed of the discovery.

Police said earlier that an elderly couple lived at the property. A man had managed to get out and was with family.
