KEY POINTS:
This is the face of a young man police believe was involved in the fatal stabbing of Panmure furniture maker Daryl Graydon in the early hours of Saturday morning.
The sketch was drawn by a police artist based on witness descriptions of an olive-skinned man, who is believed to have been aged 17 to 20 with dark spiky hair and wearing an electric blue shirt and white shoes.
The man is believed to have been one of two young men who followed Mr Graydon for about 1.3km before stabbing him several times in the middle of a busy Howick street.
The 24-year-old victim and his friends had just left a party in Mellons Bay Rd when they got into a minor fight with two men.
Detective Senior Sergeant Peter Jones said a female voice was heard in the initial altercation but the group was not fighting over a girl.
A witness had said it was a "bit of a boy thing" and a "young male thing".
After a bit of pushing and shoving, Mr Graydon and his friend, Campbell Sussex, moved on but police believe they were followed for almost half an hour up the steep road and on to Ridge Rd. It was only when they got near the Nelson St intersection that they realised they were being followed.
Mr Sussex told the Herald on Sunday that two men came across the road and started yelling in Afrikaans.
As they got closer, each pulled out a knife and ran after them. He said he escaped only because he slipped and his attacker's knife missed.
Mr Jones said Mr Graydon was stabbed several times. He staggered on to the footpath then lay down in a driveway, while his attackers ran off down Nelson St.
They are believed to have cut through properties on their way towards Howe St and police are urging residents to check their backyards for any discarded items.
Mr Graydon died in the back of an ambulance. Yesterday his family made a plea through the Herald for his attackers to "have a heart" and hand themselves in.
Police have said they are confident they will catch those responsible, and urge them to come forward and give their version of events before police find them first.
The second attacker is described as European with blond hair and freckles. He wore a brown and grey hooded top. Both attackers are described as having South African accents but police say they are not restricting their enquiries by focusing only on the South African community.
Mr Jones appealed for anyone who witnessed the earlier altercation in Mellons Bay Rd or who drove past the stabbing on Ridge Rd at about 1.45am Saturday to contact the police on 0800 4 RIDGE (0800 474-343).
