KEY POINTS:
Police are hunting two Maori men, who they believe kidnapped a Dutch honeymooning couple at gunpoint in the Bay of Islands.
The couple were attacked as they got ready for bed in their campervan at Haruru Falls, near Paihia, about 10pm on Friday.
The woman was sexually assaulted in an ordeal that stretched over several hours as the couple were driven around and forced to withdraw cash from ATM machines.
They were finally dumped in their campervan at the tiny settlement of Towai, 15km south of Kawakawa, around 3am on Saturday.
The men were disguised and police earlier could not say what ethnicity they were.
Northland police communications officer Sarah Kennett today said the victims had been able to supply some information on the offenders' ethnicity and appearance.
"They appear to be Maori but they're not sure at this stage," Mrs Kennett said.
"One of the offenders was definitely taller than the other."
Police were today speaking to witnesses who were in the Haruru Falls area on Friday and saw the campervan.
Towai is a remote spot about 40km north of Whangarei but Mrs Kennett had no information on how the offenders left after dumping their victims.
She asked anybody with information to call police on 09 405 2966.
