A 23-year-old man was due to appear in court today after South Westland police found more than $40,000 of allegedly stolen property and $4000 cash in various currencies.
Constable Tony LeSueur said police stopped a driver on Mt Hercules, near Whataroa, 114km south west of Hokitika, on the West Coast last Thursday.
Mr LeSueur said police were interested in the man as they believed he had been involved in breaking into vehicles at the Copland Valley carpark near Fox Glacier.
The man, a cleaner from Fox Glacier, was arrested for providing false details.
Police searched his property and vehicle and recovered a large amount of property and money.
"There was enough property to fill a covered trailer."
Mr LeSueur said the property was estimated to be worth more than $40,000.
He said the items were linked to offences spread between Wanaka and Fox Glacier which happened from September 2006.
