As World Cup tourist drivers get pinged on roads around the country, Wairarapa police are preparing for the first of the campervans to roll into town.
Wairarapa police roading manager Sergeant Chris Megaw said it had been a quiet start to the tournament in the region. Many tourists will be following State Highway 1 between games, but others will be using Wairarapa roads - especially closer to the two Palmerston North matches.
"Hopefully they will come here, they will drive through, and they won't draw any undue attention to themselves," Mr Megaw said.
But elsewhere in New Zealand, tourists were doing just that. A German visitor had his driver's licence suspended and given a hefty fine for speeding on Sunday.
The driver was travelling through Mokau on State Highway 3 to the Ireland-United States game in New Plymouth and police said his fate served as a reminder that international drivers were not exempt from New Zealand's road rules. A British couple were also caught speeding at the same Mokau location in a campervan.
