Gisborne police are praising the efforts of a young woman who saved another from a serious domestic incident in which bricks were allegedly used as weapons.
A fight broke out between a man and his former partner at a house in the Gisborne suburb of Kaiti.
The incident sparked an hour-long manhunt.
Several witnesses heard screaming coming from the house but it was the actions of a 20-year-old woman that police believe were responsible for ending the incident.
The petite young woman heard the commotion, ran inside the house and physically intervened to stop the incident, said Detective Owen Maurirere.
"We probably cannot emphasise enough how brave that girl was for intervening. She was truly courageous," he said.
Mr Maurirere said the young woman's actions prevented any further serious injury.
Police allege the man used assorted objects as weapons.
The woman was admitted to Gisborne Hospital with serious injuries, including slashes and puncture-like wounds to her face and back.
"The intervention of the neighbour allowed the woman an opportunity to run away for help.
"Just her presence was enough," Mr Maurirere said.
