Police pleased at Easter activity

ACTIVE: Wairarapa police have reported no major road accidents over the long weekend, and only one drink-driver caught.

Wairarapa police had a "pleasing" Easter weekend with no major road accidents and no significant rise in crime.

This contrasts with national statistics where police were disappointed with the highest number of fatal road accidents in three years.

Wairarapa Senior Sergeant Mike Sutton said there were only "a few minor accidents" over the Easter break in Wairarapa with no major injuries.

He said the lower speed tolerance and active policing had made the difference.

"That was our focus for the break. No one was really hurt on our roads, it's very pleasing," Mr Sutton said.

Mr Sutton said there had been positive feedback from on-duty Wairarapa police, who said the majority of drivers were driving to the conditions.

He said "the message on drink-driving is getting through", with only one drink- driver caught during 250 breath tests over the weekend.

Other crime indicators were stable over the weekend.

There was no spike in burglaries or family violence.

Mr Sutton said part of this may have been due to the restricted sale of liquor over the break.

The 4km speed-limit tolerance for drivers will be in effect until next Monday.
