Police pick up 'pedestrian' on Auckland's Harbour Bridge

Police have picked up a man who was taking a stroll across Auckland's Harbour Bridge this morning.

A spokeswoman said police were called at 10.08am after a pedestrian was seen walking up the bridge, part of Auckland's Northern Motorway, toward the North Shore.

Multiple calls were received from the public before police arrived, she said.

Police gave the man a ride to Takapuna.

The witness said the man appeared European, with black hair, black clothing and a backpack. He appeared to be a tourist aged between 18 and 35.

It is illegal to cross the Harbour Bridge on foot or by bicycle.

However a shared pathway for pedestrians and cyclists, to be attached to the bridge, is in the works and has the support of the new Government.

The Skypath is expected to take several years to complete and to cost at least $40m.
