KEY POINTS:
Christchurch police were called on to make a high speed dash across the city early today - but it was the imminent arrival of a baby rather than criminals they were interested in.
Inspector John Doherty of southern police communications said police were called to the maternity emergency by a midwife about 1.30am.
The midwife had gone to Christchurch Women's hospital where the mum-to-be was meant to be meeting her.
However, things had progressed quickly and the woman had begun to give birth at home, Mr Doherty said.
The midwife was escorted across town by a police patrol in time for a quick delivery.
Mr Doherty said both mother and baby were doing well and the officers were pleased to announce "It's a girl".
