KEY POINTS:
A man impersonating a plain clothes police officer has used flashing red lights to pull over a woman near Nelson.
Police are looking for the man after the incident about 10.30pm on Good Friday on the Appleby Straight near Richmond.
Nelson Area Commander Inspector Brian McGurk said the local woman was driving along the road when a car with flashing red lights on the dashboard signalled her to stop.
The male occupant got out of his car and approached the woman, asking her where she had been and where she was going.
She later told police the car was similar to a usual police car, a Holden Commodore or similar, coloured green.
Mr McGurk said police wanted to hear about any such incidents.
The alleged offender was European, in his 30s or 40s, of average build and wearing a white t-shirt.
The maximum penalty for pretending to be a police officer is three months in jail and/or a fine of up to $200.
